If you’ve been hearing wondrous tales of special contact lenses that are worn only at night and produce beautifully corrected vision during the day, you’ve probably been hearing about orthokeratology, or Ortho-K. What is this form of eye care all about, and how can it benefit you?

Here are some frequently asked questions about Ortho-K Answered by Our Hasbrouck Heights Optometrist:

  • What is orthokeratology? Orthokeratology, also referred to as Ortho-K, is a means of providing temporary vision correction by reshaping the corneas through a special set of contact lenses. The lenses are worn overnight, gently reshaping the corneal contours and leaving you with clear, sharp vision when you awaken.
  • What conditions can Ortho-K correct? Our Hasbrouch Heights optometrist can prescribe Ortho-K to compensate for refractive errors that might otherwise require glasses, contacts or refractive surgery. These conditions include mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia.
  • How long does the gentle vision shaping effect last? The gentle vision shaping effect provided by Ortho-K may last anywhere from one day to multiple days; it varies on a case-by-case basis. The nice thing about Ortho-K, however, is that you can always re-insert the lenses as needed to keep re-correcting your vision.
  • How can Ortho-K help children with myopia? Ortho-K has been shown to slow the progression of myopia in younger eyes. This is a hugely important benefit because most of the myopia a person develops occurs during the growing years. By nipping your children’s nearsightedness in the bud through orthokeratology, our Hasbrouck Heights eye doctor could  be helping them establish significantly better vision for life.
  • Who are the best candidates for this form of gentle vision shaping? Most people with mild to moderate refractive errors are potentially good candidates for orthokeratology. If you have severe myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism, you may get better results from another option. Ortho-K tends to provide more consistent results for myopia than for other refractive errors. Our Hasbrouck Heights optometrist can tell you whether you’re a good candidate.
